Celebration of Wildlife Heritage

The Spring Woodland Festival held at East Dartmoor NNR on Sunday was a great success. The sun shone, the birds sang and the butterflies were on the wing. Over 400 people came along to meet wildlife experts, go on guided walks and take part in hands on activities. People had the opportunity to look at a bat close up, handle a slow worm and dissect owl pellets in search of small mammal bones. There were pond dipping sessions, ant walks and the chance to talk to enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides about all manner of wildlife on the reserve and across Dartmoor. The Scouts ran a BBQ, whilst Dartmoor Harmony a local choir entertained the crowd and Clive Pig told tall stories. Inspired by the wildlife they had seen visitors were able to recreate the favorite thing painting it on a silk banner which will be displayed at future events.

This event was organised by Moor than meets the eye and Natural England to help people get closer to nature and see the reserve through the eyes of local experts. If our bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund is successful we hope to work with the partnership, local experts and communities across the bid area on Dartmoor looking at all aspects of our rich and diverse heritage within the landscape.

The Heritage Lottery Fund will meet on the 3rd June to decide if our bid has been successful. We hope to find out soon after that!
